Shared vs VPS hosting: which fits your site?

Both can run a website well. The difference is how resources, control and operational responsibility are packaged. Choose from your workload, not from the assumption that more expensive is automatically better.

Shared hosting in practice

Your site shares a server environment with other customers, while the host manages much of the underlying setup. It is often a sensible starting point for a small site, blog or portfolio. Review storage, CPU, process and traffic policies because “unlimited” labels commonly have fair-use limits.

What a VPS changes

A virtual private server provides a more isolated allocation of resources and usually more control over software configuration. That flexibility can help custom applications or workloads that outgrow shared plans. It also brings responsibility: unmanaged VPS customers may need to handle security patches, monitoring, backups and server troubleshooting themselves.

Compare the work, not only specifications

Ask whether the VPS is managed, who updates the operating system, what backup restores cost, and whether support helps with the application. Compare memory and CPU allocations, but also your own time. A well-run shared or managed WordPress plan may be easier than a poorly maintained VPS.

A practical decision rule

Start with shared or managed hosting if your site is new, your requirements are standard and you value simplicity. Consider VPS when you can identify a resource limit or configuration need and have a plan for server operations. If spikes rather than steady load are your issue, review cloud options separately.
